A University of Leicester student has won the 2015 Breaking Into News initiative, run by ITV News and Media Trust.

Sally Wynter won the competition after developing a news report that showed how a local charity was tackling homelessness.

The 20-year-old worked alongside ITV News Central reporter Michael Sibert on the piece, before presenting it to a panel of high-profile judges from the broadcast journalism industry.

Top judge, ITV News’ Charlene White, said Sally showed ‘great promise’ as she had the deciding vote to give her the award over eight other finalists.

The initiative is run to discover new talent and help increase diversity in the newsroom. It is specifically designed to support young people who wouldn’t normally have this kind of opportunity.

Now in its fourth year, it gives 18 to 25-year-olds the chance to be mentored by top broadcast journalists in ITV regional newsrooms.

Sally will officially be crowned the Breaking Into News winner at an event in London next month.

She will also get the chance to spend the day helping to produce ITV News at Ten.
