The NHS trust which runs hospitals in Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Goole has revealed it racked up a £4.6 million deficit in just April alone.

Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Trust had the original target of a one million pound overspend. Managers have been meeting to review the figures but say they're still under huge pressure and are having to rely on expensive agency staff.

The income and expenditure figures discussed at the trust’s board meeting yesterday relate to the financial plan submitted as part of NHS annual planning requirements in December 2016.

These figures indicate an activity/ income variance of £3.5million. This plan would normally be resubmitted and updated with the latest activity profiles and related financial out-turn on a month by month basis in March 2016.

The trust did not resubmit a plan following discussions with the trust’s regulator, NHS Improvement, as the timing coincided with the Trust being placed into Financial Special Measures.

The trust is in the process of creating and agreeing a financial recovery plan which will likely set out a more realistic profile within a revised timeline with updated projected staffing, activity and financial out-turn figures.
