North Yorkshire county council make urgent appeal for volunteers to save libraries

As many as 20 libraries could be closed in North Yorkshire if the county council cannot find volunteers and community groups to run them.

The authority said it has to save £1.6m from its library service over the next five years.

It is proposing to keep seven so called "core libraries" in bigger towns like Harrogate and Scarborough run by staff and volunteers.

Five libraries in smaller towns would have one paid member of staff only - and the remainder would need to be run by volunteers.
