Barnsley's international Tug of War contenders

A Tug of War team who train in a barn near Barnsley are making last preparations before they represent England in what's described as the 'Six Nations' of Tug of War.

The Kilroe team have taken eight gold medals from the UK indoor Tug of War Championships and this year they are hoping to take another title.

Competitions are organised in weight classes where each team of eight pullers must not exceed the stated weight.

The club members diet throughout the year, losing up to a stone in the run-up to a competition and train three times week.

Puller Andrew Howe said:

"We really want people to realise that this is a serious sport that we work really hard at. It was part of the Olympics in the past and it is our dream to one day get the sport back into the Games."

The Tug of War Association organises men’s, women’s and youth competitions and over 50 countries have teams which compete internationally.

This year's competition is being held in at the Huddersfield Sports Centre on Saturday.
