Army medic honoured

Michelle Ping Credit: Ministry of Defence

A Royal Naval reservist medic from Sheffield who saved the life of a wounded soldier in Afghanistan while under fire from the Taliban has received the Queen's Volunteer Reserves Medal.

Air Engineering Mechanic Michelle Ping,38, from the Royal Naval Reserve Air Branch, rushed to the aid of Scottish soldier, Highlander Craig Paterson, 22, after he was shot in the head while trying to target insurgent fighters from a rooftop last summer in Lashkar Gar.

Ms Ping, who works as specialist paramedic in Yorkshire said: "Craig was the soldier who was shot and he needed my help and as a medic that was my responsibility. I didn't think about anything else, I just wanted to make sure he was alright."
