Woman jailed over illegal waste site in Scunthorpe
A woman from Scunthorpe who was said to have put the public at risk by running an illegal waste management operation has been jailed.
Nessa Anne Thompson, of Thompson Waste Recycling Ltd, illegally continued to operate at a site on Winterton Road after the company went into liquidation.
The Environment Agency said the amount of waste being kept at the site in presented a human health and fire risk.
Following a fire in May 2014, firefighters were advised not to re-use the firewater due to the risk of waterborne diseases linked to the number of rats on site.
Thompson, 45, of Scotter Road, pleaded guilty to two charges over illegal waste management and was jailed for six months.
The Environment Agency said: “This site posed a risk to property, the local environment, and people’s health because our advice was ignored.
“This prosecution demonstrates that we take cases such as this very seriously and will not hesitate to prosecute if necessary, to protect the environment and local communities.”
