Residents help clear main road blocked with sand after torrential rain
Road crews and residents are cleaning up at Sleights near Whitby after torrential rain flushed tonnes of sand and gravel out of an escape lane and blocked a main road.
The A169 connecting Whitby to Pickering remains closed after rain swept the gravel from an arrester bed on the steep Blue Bank approach to Sleights hundreds of metres into the village itself.
Piles of sand are now being removed by locals using shovels and workmen using gully cleaning trucks.
