Holidaymaker fighting for her life after freak accident on Greek island
A holidaymaker from South Yorkshire is fighting for her life in a Greek hospital after a freak incident in a nightclub.
Laurie Jay Balfour, who is 25 and from the village of Edlington near Doncaster, has had life-saving surgery after being struck on the head by a heavy gas canister on the island of Zante.
Just two days into their holiday, she and her friends had gone to a nightclub on the Laganas strip on the Greek island of Zante.
Her friends say that within minutes of arriving a nitrogen canister weighing around 15 stone - and which they say was perched on one of the bars - fell and hit Laurie on the head.
So extensive were Laurie injuries that she was airlifted by a military plane to a hospital in Athens were medics reportedly removed part of her skull to perform life-saving surgery.
