New details of £60million Meadowhall refurbishment revealed
More details have been released about the £60million refurbishment of Meadowhall.
A number of businesses from the Sheffield region are being used to overhaul the shopping centre, which has been open 26 years.
The redesign will include 3,000 sq m of perforated metal cladding from Sheffield-based EE Ingleton Engineering, 1,500m of glass balustrade supplied by Dearneside, half an acre of timber cladding and 750m of circular columns.
The mall will be split into four areas:
· The Arcade, hosting shows and displays throughout the year
· The High Street, specifically focused on families and children
· Park Lane, a 'high fashion' zone,
· The Gallery, aimed at young adults, teenagers and children
Architects BDP say "dated" features like arches, bridges and Juliet balconies will be removed.
Meadowhall says 70 per cent of the construction budget has been awarded to local businesses and trades. Eleven companies have been commissioned for the project so far, and it is estimated that 63.5 per cent of the overall spend of the refurbishment will be with local businesses.
The refurbishment is due to finish by the end of next year.
