Man charged with racist abuse during FA Cup game

A man has been charged in connection with racist behaviour directed towards football players in Carlisle United's FA Cup fourth round tie with Everton.

Owen Newbury, aged 18, of Skinburness Drive, Silloth, has been charged with racially/religiously aggravated intentional harassment/alarm/distress by words contrary to Section 4a of the Public Order Act.

The alleged incident occurred following Everton's first goal in the match held at Brunton Park, Carlisle, on the 31st January 2016.

Superintendent Justin Bibby said:

I’d like to thank the public for their ongoing help and support with this investigation. This was a hate crime that attracted widespread condemnation and our prompt response demonstrates that we will not tolerate this kind of behaviour in Cumbria.
