Police: burglars from North West targeting Keswick

Cumbria Police Credit: PA

Cumbria Police believe burglars from the Liverpool and Manchester areas could be targeting Cumbrian towns... in particular Keswick.

The warning comes following two attempted burglaries in the county.

On Saturday 29 August, at around 10:50am, a man from Portinscale, Keswick, heard footsteps coming from upstairs in his home.

When he went to check the source of the noise, he discovered a male intruder.

When challenged, the man claimed to have been looking for his B&B.

He's described as white, in his late 40s/early 50s, well-tanned, around 5ft 7”, clean shaven, wearing two jackets and a brown leather/suede flat cap. He spoke with a Liverpool accent.

There was a similar incident in the Kendal area on Monday 24 August at around 11:30am. Nothing was stolen in either of the break-ins.

We have reason to believe that individuals from the Liverpool and/or Manchester areas are targeting the Keswick area for burglaries. We believe that they are targeting both private homes and hotels/B&Bs during daylight hours for sneak-in burglaries – when confronted they may claim to be tourists looking for their accommodation.

I would urge people in the local area to make sure they lock their doors and windows, and not give anyone the opportunity to sneak in to their property unaware."
