"The Seven Stories" art project awarded £40,000

An arts project that supports young, disabled and disadvantaged people in the county has been awarded £40,000.

Cumbria County Council secured grant funding from Arts Council of England lottery funding, to support “The Seven Stories”, a new project based at Carlisle and Penrith Libraries.

The Seven Stories, 16 month arts project, will target hard-to-reach groups and local schools through a programme of art workshops, exhibitions and performances.

The work will then be exhibited at Carlisle Library in November 2015, with a second exhibition and performance taking place in February 2016.

“We are always looking for new ways to engage with communities in Cumbria and this project is so important because it specifically targets hard-to-reach groups. This project will encourage project participants to use the library’s collection of books as the catalyst to develop their ideas and artwork.”

“Arts and cultural activities have been proven to increase health and wellbeing within communities, so this grant funding is very welcome – it means we are able to deliver an excellent programme of work without it hitting our budget.”

– Cllr Ian Stewart, Cabinet Member for Libraries
