Around 2,000 runners have been competing in the Great Cumbrian Run, one of the biggest half marathons in the region.

Runners from all over the country set off from Carlisle Castle at 10am and ran through the centre of the city, through Wetheral and back to the Sheepmount Stadium in Bitts Park.

The run was officially opened by Tayla Colling, 16, from Penrith and Carly Winder, 24, from Plumbland, who were selected because they were both supported by charity Teenage Cancer Trust after their diagnosis - one of this year’s four nominated charities for the race.

Thousands of pounds have been raised for The Teenage Cancer Trust, The Calvert Trust, Eden Valley Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support in Cumbria.

"It's been a fantastic day. We've had almost 2,000 runners.

"The weather was perfect for running conditions. This is probably Cumbria's biggest half marathon and it's going from strength to strength.

"It's great for everyone whether they're running for charity, to get a personal best or just to have fun."
