Tributes paid to Derek Batey

Tributes have been being paid to the TV personality Derek Batey - known for hosting the show Mr and Mrs - who has died at the age of 84.

Derek Batey who was born in Brampton in Cumbria, began his career with ITV Border in Carlisle.

He fronted Mr and Mrs throughout the 70s and 80s, bringing him national recognition. He died at a hospice near his home in Lythm St Annes last night following a short illness.

Cumbrian broadcaster and host of 'Mr and Mrs', Derek Batey, has died aged 84.

The TV star, who was born in Brampton, died following a short illness.

Mr Batey worked for Border Television from its beginnings in 1961.

"He was a proud Cumbrian. He was a people person and was never happier than when he was talking to people. He could be talking to the Queen or the person next door.

"He ran the iconic Mr and Mrs show but lots of other things too, including the chat show 'Look who's talking'.

"He would always let the people he was talking to take the limelight. He will be much missed."
