Get sweeping for chimney fire safety week
With colder nights fast approaching, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service are reminding people to make sure that chimneys are ready for the winter months ahead.
The Chimney Fire Safety Week is raising awareness about the dangers of fires in winter, and urging householders to have their chimney swept by a registered chimney sweep.
Keeping a clean chimney will help prevent chimney damage and in worse cases, household fires:
Always use a fire guard to protect against flying sparks from hot embers
Make sure embers are properly put out before you go to bed
Keep chimneys and flues clean and well maintained
How often you should have your chimney swept:
Smokeless coals - at least once a year
Wood - up to four times a year
Bituminous coal - twice a year
Oil - once a year
Gas - once a year
