After leaving the cobbled streets of ITV's Coronation Street actress Julie Hesmondhalgh has been touring the country with Black Roses: The Killing of Sophie Lancaster playing her mother Sylvia.

The production, in association with Rosehill Theatre, stopped off in west Cumbria as part of its run.

On 11 August 2007, Sophie Lancaster was beaten unconscious in Stubbeylee Park, Bacup and later died from her injuries in hospital.

She was 20 years old, had just passed her A-Levels and was working out what to do with her life. She was killed because she dressed differently.

Written as an elegy to Sophie by poet Simon Armitage - alongside the words of Sophie's mother Sylvia Lancaster, Black Roses comes to West Cumbria as part of a short nation wide tour.

Lori Carnochan went to meet Julie Hesmondhalgh.
