Hitchin and Harpenden MP Peter Lilley has called on the Department of Transport to review the noise disturbance from night flights at Luton airport.

The Conservative MP has long been campaigning for Luton to be treated the same way as Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted.

It follows a consultation launched last week to bring in tighter noise quotas and introduce quieter planes at the other London airports.

However Luton says its noise control standards are already tighter than those airports.

The noise caused by night flights from Luton is particularly distressing for those affected. As London grows, air traffic is increasing.

"There were 4,897 night flights into and out of Luton Airport between July and September 2016 - 12% more than during the same period in 2015.

"I shall be writing to the Government to ask why Luton Airport has been excluded from this consultation."

“London Luton Airport already has tighter noise control standards than Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted.

"We are always willing to participate in any discussion that can help us achieve the appropriate balance in managing our social, environmental and economic impact”.
