M11 to remain closed most of the day after fatal car fire

The M11 southbound near Cambridge is set to be closed for most of Wednesday after a fatal car fire.

There's severe congestion on surrounding roads including the A14.

A car caught fire on the carriageway at around 8:30am causing a full closure of the southbound M11 and lane 2 of the northbound M11 between junction 12 for Barton and junction 11 for Trumpington and the A10.

Police say there is no indication of a collision taking place or any other vehicles being involved. One person, a man, is believed to have been in the vehicle.

Highways England is advising drivers to consider alternative routes or to delay their journey if possible. The road is likely to remain closed for most of today, possibly into the evening peak, while the vehicle is recovered and the road is repaired.

"Long distance traffic is being advised to leave the M11 at junction 14 and join the A14 eastbound to junction 35, for Stow Cum Quy, continue along the A1303 and A1304, to join the A11 southbound at Six Mile Bottom and rejoin the southbound M11 at junction 9.

"Traffic already past junction 14 on the southbound M11 can exit at junction 12 and will be diverted via the A603, A1198 and A505 to rejoin the M11 at junction 10 or take the northbound A10 at Royston to rejoin at junction 11. Local traffic is advised to avoid the area and use alternative local routes.
