Resident describes 'terrible tragedy' of fire that destroyed Essex pub

A resident has described the 'terrible tragedy' of a fire that completely damaged the roof of a pub in Essex.

Two children and a man have had to be rescued by firefighters, after the fire broke out at the Red Lion pub in Great Wakering near Southend early this morning.

Firefighters rescued the children through the window - no-one was injured.

The initial investigation into the cause of the fire suggests it was accidental.

It was a terrible terrible tragedy. I have lived here for a long time, it's a very small community and it's a place where people meet and have lunches together. It's been here for such a long time, it will be a tragic loss while it is closed.
