Her mother Rosalind Allum told the inquest that after her daughter was admitted to hospital for the last time following three suicide bids she told family and friends she still intended to kill herself and that these remarks were passed on to staff.
Ms Allum said: 'It was just peace that she wanted. I think she gave up. I don't think she felt in control anymore.'
In 2006, Hannah Allum won a place at Cambridge University to study natural sciences but left Robinson College after a year because of mental health problems.
She was admitted to Fulbourn Hospital several times, the last time being in December 2015.
On 22 January 2016 Hannah was found dead in her room.
Hannah Allum's family believes more could have been done to prevent her death.
In particular her mother questioned whether she should have been able to leave the hospital unsupervised and, at the very least, whether someone should have checked what items she had bought.
The inquest is expected to last a week.
