Summer thunderstorms spawn more twisters in soggy June

More funnel clouds have been spotted spinning down from thunderstorm clouds across the Anglia region as the June summer soaking continues.

A funnel cloud is the fore-runner of a full-blown tornado but it only becomes a tornado if the twisting, swirling column of air spins all the way down to the ground.

Funnel clouds were spotted at Stoke Ferry near Downham Market in west Norfolk and Ipswich in Suffolk.

Saturday's thunderstorms added more rainfall to already swollen June rain totals in the Anglia region.

Some places in the Anglia region have already seen rainfall totals more than double than would normally fall in June.

On Saturday, Marham in Norfolk was the wettest place in the UK with 35 mm (1.4 inches) of rain falling between 10am and 10pm.

Rainfall totals in the 12 hours to 10pm on Saturday 25 June 2016

  • 35 mm in Marham, Norfolk

  • 31 mm in Shoeburyness, Essex

  • 26 mm in Tibenham, Norfolk

  • 25 mm at Andrewsfield near Braintree, Essex

  • 10 mm in Santon Downham, Suffolk

June 2016 in the Anglia has been exceptionally unsettled with heavy and thundery downpours hitting some areas but missing others.

There has been flash flooding in many areas as huge quantities of rain falls in short periods, as much a month's worth of rain in just a couple of hours. That amount of water overwhelms drainage systems and causes flooding.

By Friday, Santon Downham in Suffolk had seen 140 mm (5.5 inches) of rain so far in June. That is more than double the June average of 59 mm (2.3 inches) in that location.
