Coastguard makes 530 mile trip to rescue unwell yachtsman

The UK coastguard launched an epic 530-mile round trip to rescue a yachtsman in distress 200 miles off the Isles of Scilly.

The helicopter had to land on the islands to refuel on both the outbound and return journey in a mission that pushed to the edge of their potential flying range.

In a tightly-timed operation, they managed to identify the yacht and winch the ill person for urgent medical treatment.

The casualty was then taken to Newquay Airport and transferred to Treliske Hospital by land ambulance.

Mark Coupland, chief Pilot for the UK Coastguard at Newquay, said the successful rescue had been largely thanks to close work with the Irish Coastguard, who monitored the boat's position and guided in the UK team.

Mark Rodaway, Commander for the UK Coastguard, also thanked both crews for their close work.

"At this range, it was vital that the helicopter was able to rendezvous with the vessel and evacuate the injured crewman with as little delay as possible," he said.

"Our priority is to protect life at sea and we will always do everything possible to provide assistance for a mariner in need."
