Terminally ill teen weds childhood sweetheart after strangers raise thousands
A terminally ill teenager married her childhood sweetheart thanks to the donations of hundreds of people who helped fund the wedding.
Amber Snailham, 17, said "I do" when boyfriend Callum Firks got down on one knee after she was told her cancer had spread to her brain.
Callum, also 17, decided to pop the question after learning Amber's top bucket-list wish was to get married.
Family and friends pitched in to organise the wedding in a matter of weeks with the help of £6,000 worth of donations from strangers wanting to help make the dream day come true.
And on Friday the pair wed at St Peter's Church in Bishopsworth in Bristol before continuing the celebrations at a nearby hotel.
Speaking ahead of the wedding on Friday, Callum's mum, Vicky Bishop, said: "He [Callum] said he wanted to get engaged, even though it's bad times with money.
It has all come together. Everybody has been so amazing. It is brilliant that they're getting married.
"Under the circumstances it is sad, it's really sad. Amber has been through a lot, poor girl".
The couple were best friends for years after meeting at school and started dating around a year ago.
Amber has suffered from bone cancer since she was just 13 and finished a six-month round of chemotherapy in July.
But in late October she was told that a tumour had appeared in her brain.
Mum-in-law-to-be Ms Bishop said doctors didn't say how long they expect Amber to live for but believes it is likely to be "months".
The family initially set a modest target of £1,000 on the Bucket List Wishes GoFundMe page to cover the basic costs of the wedding and were shocked when hundreds of donations flooded in.
Joanne Snailham, Amber's mum, said they were "determined" to make the day a success.
