Judy Murray hails world number one Andy after 'incredible' year
Judy Murray has hailed her son's "incredible" year after the double-Olympic champion was crowned world number one for the first time.
Andy Murray, 29, capped the best season of his career by clinching his maiden Paris Masters title - the day after overtaking Novak Djokovic to become Briton's first-ever singles' number one.
Speaking to Good Morning Britain on Monday, Judy Murray said: "I was absolutely chuffed for him. I know better than anybody how hard he works and how much he put in to his tennis... since he started playing as an eight-year-old.
"It's a great reward for him. He's been so patient and so resilient. He's a great fighter and never gives up."
The tennis star has enjoyed a remarkable year, winning both Olympic and Wimbledon titles - as well as securing his second Grand Slam and eighth title overall - on the way to heading up the charts.
It is a feat even more impressive given the high calibre of competition in the sport that also includes Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer - who, alongside Djokovic, have hogged top spot for almost 13 years.
She said: "You've got so many great players - some of the greatest of all time - he's done it in a very dominant era so there's a lot to be very proud about.
"Although he has always been able to beat the others on occasion, he hasn't been able to do it consistently.
"He's been very focused this year. He's an incredible competitor and fighter on the court.
"He's won eight titles [in 2016 so far] including two slams and the Olympics, and won the last four tournaments in a row. It's given him enough points to get past Djokovic which six months ago - when he was 7,000 points adrift - looked like it was pretty impossible.
"You're the one at the top which everyone wants to beat - you've got to the pinnacle of your sport."
Andy Murray's achievement now matches the success of his brother, Jamie, who achieved world number one status in the men's doubles tennis earlier this year.
She said: "It's great they're not directly competing with each other. It certainly makes it a lot less stressful for me.
"[Jamie] got to number one in March this year and won two Slams... and got his OBE from the Queen a week ago.
"It's been a really exciting 12 months for the whole family."
