East Kilbride FC won their 27th consecutive game today - breaking the world record set by Dutch giants Ajax.

Ajax, led by Johan Cryuff, won 26 league games in a row in the 1971/72 season, but the Lowland League side eclipsed this with a 3-1 victory over Glasgow this afternoon.

Kilby Manager Martin Lauchlan said: "It's the biggest achievement in the club's history.

"And this the biggest achievement In my career so far. To surpass the legend Johan Cruyff's record with Ajax is surreal.

"The players should savour and enjoy every minute of this because they deserve unbelievable credit for this run."

Ajax had 27 crates of beer sent to the semi-professional team to congratulate them on their record.

Although East Kilbride won today, the team will not be entering the Guinness World Records because they do not play "top level" football.

The great Ajax side, featuring players such as Cruyff, Johan Neeskens, and Barry Hulshoff won three consecutive European Cups between 1971 and 1973.

East Kilbride are aiming for promotion to Scotland's League Two.

But while they may never emulate Ajax's European success, the team from East Kilbride have earned their place in football folklore alongside the game's giants.
