Turkey targets Islamic State and Kurdish militants in northern Syria

Turkey has targeted so-called Islamic State as well as Kurdish militants in northern Syria.

Artillery fire from inside Turkey hit IS targets and Kurdish YPG fighters in the Syrian towns of Jarablus and Manbij.

The operation comes amid reports Turkish-backed Syrian rebels are preparing to launch an offensive to drive IS out of the region.

Turkey vowed to "completely cleanse" IS from its border region after a suicide bomber murdered 54 people - including 22 children - at a Kurdish wedding in the Turkish town of Gaziantep on Saturday.

The Turkish military also pounded Kurdish YPG militants, whom it views as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) - a Turkish-Kurdish rebel group fighting for autonomy within Turkey.

It fears attempts by Syrian Kurds to extend their control along the border with Syria could add momentum to the Kurdish insurgency within Turkey.

Turkey is becoming ever more embroiled in the Syrian civil war and officials have warned it could be the target of more deadly bombings.
