Parliament petitions committee removes over 70,000 'fraudulent' signatures

The committee that oversees parliamentary petitions has said that it has removed 77,000 fake signatures from the EU Referendum re-run petition.

The House of Commons Petitions Committee took to Twitter to explain that they are investigating claims of fraud and will take action on any fraudulent signatures.

The petition, which asks for a second referendum in the event of an indecisive vote, has gathered over three million signatures since Britain voted to leave the EU.

A statement released on Twitter by the committee said: "We take fraud in the petitions system very seriously.

"The Petitions Committee will be considering the petition at its meeting next week, and will decide whether or not to schedule a debate on it."
