A month's worth of rain predicted to fall overnight
A month's worth of rain could fall overnight in some areas as storms which have blighted parts of Europe make their way to the UK.
After a fairly pleasant Bank Holiday weekend, things are set to change significantly from this evening.
Severe weather warnings have been issued as thundery storms are set to sweep across the country in the next two days.
Met Office forecaster Emma Boorman told ITV News: "There has been a lot of thunder activity over the near continent and that is set to push towards us overnight.
"It will start in south east England so don't be surprised if you wake up to a few rumbles of thunder in the early morning.
"As the day goes on that rain will travel north towards the Midlands and Yorkshire.
"And we could see 60mm of rain in just a few hours, which is average for the whole month of May."
The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for rain in the East Midlands, east of England, London and south east England, north east England and Yorkshire and Humber on Tuesday.
It said there is a risk it could turn torrential in places with frequent lightning. Winds will also increase with gales on the coast.
While most places are expected to miss the worst of the weather, flash flooding is still a risk.
The weather warning will remain in place until 12pm on Wednesday.
