David Cameron bought a second-hand Nissan Micra for his wife worth £1,500 as a "cheap run-around", according to the salesman.

Car dealer Iain Harris thought he was being wound up when he was told the Prime Minister intended to visit his showroom Witney Used Car Centre in Oxfordshire.

Mr Harris was called on Friday and asked to stay open late by the Conservative leader's security team.

But the salesman initially thought his friends were winding him.

Instead, at the agreed time of 5.32pm, the Prime Minister arrived at the dealership - based in his constituency - to purchase a £1,495 blue Nissan Micra for his wife Samantha.

The Prime Minister inspected the vehicle and instructed his aide to stand behind it while he checked the brake lights, staying for about half an hour.

He returned the following day to complete the sale.

Mr Harris said: "It was a bit surreal, but likewise he was just a normal chap buying a car for his wife, a normal conversation, normal sort of deal and that was it,".
