Middlesbrough have been promoted to the Premier League after holding Brighton to a 1-1 draw at the Riverside Stadium.

The home side started the match level on points with their opponents and safe in the knowledge that a draw would be enough to secure promotion thanks to their superior goal difference.

Cristhian Stuani's 19th minute goal gave Boro a deserved half-time lead but a superb header from Dale Stephens levelled the scoring ten minutes after the restart.

Four minutes later, the Brighton midfielder was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Gaston Ramirez, who was forced off with the nasty-looking injury sustained from Stephens' challenge.

With a player down, it was always going to prove difficult for Brighton to force a decisive winner during the game's closing stages, and Boro held on to secure a place in England's top flight.
