Congo music star Papa Wemba dies after stage collapse
Congolese musician Papa Wemba has died after collapsing during a live concert.
Video from the show in Ivory Coast showed the 66-year-old slumped on stage.
Known worldwide as the King of Congolese rumba, Wemba was a pioneer of soukous music who combined Western rock influences with traditional sounds.
He was named Best African Artist at the inaugural all-Africa Music Awards, KORA, in 1996. He sang with Stevie Wonder and he won a gold disc for a recording with Peter Gabriel.
The Congolese Culture Minister Baudouin Banza Mukalay called it a “great loss for the country and all of Africa”.
