Man found dead after car plunges into river from motorway

A man has died after the car he was in plunged into a river from a motorway near Doncaster on Monday.

The man's body was found as the vehicle was removed from the River Don, just off the A1M, South Yorkshire Police said.

Police later said the man in the car, who was 39 and from Sheffield, was pronounced dead at the scene.

People involved in an unrelated collision, involving three vehicles, saw the blue Nissan Primera in the river and reported it to police at around 6.30am.

Emergency services and the regional underwater search unit attended and pulled the car from the water.

A police spokesman said: "Following reports this morning that a car had entered the River Don,off the A1 in Doncaster, a man's body has been found as the vehicle has now been recovered from the water.

"While formal identification of the body has not yet taken place, the family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers."

No one else was thought to have been in the car and no other vehicles were involved in the incident.

The A1 was closed throughout the day and reopened at around 4.30pm.
