A truly 'Despicable' drug smuggling plot has been busted by customs officials in Chile - who found more than 100 Minion-shaped ecstasy pills hidden in children's drawing sets.

Instead of crayons and drawings to be coloured in, foil 'Play Set' packages intercepted by the country's National Customs Service found the colourful psychoactive tablets shaped like the characters from the Despicable Me film series.

They are believed to have been transported from Holland in the Netherlands to Viña del Mar on the Chilean west coast.

Two men - one from Chile and the other from Argentina - have been placed on house arrest following the discovery.

During a similar operation, officers also found around half a kilo of white methamphetamine crystals hidden in the false bottoms of backpacks being carried by three women travelling from Cali, Colombia, to Sydney, Australia.

Further investigations are now being carried out.
