JK Rowling gets into Twitter argument with Glasgow MP claiming author 'defended misogynist'

Author JK Rowling got into a war of words with Glasgow East MP Natalie McGarry after the politician accused her publicly on Twitter for defending 'abusive, misogynist trolls'.

McGarry hit out at the Harry Potter author saying she supported an account under the name "Brian Spanner", an anti-Scottish nationalist account that she claimed was a 'troll' and 'abuser'.

"Almost makes me regret queuing for books," wrote McGarry.

The multi-millionaire tweeted back demanding an explanation for the accusation and the exchange soon escalated.

Rowling, who had tweeted thanks to the Brian Spanner account for raising money for her children's charity Lumos, said: "You aren't some random hater, Natalie. You're an elected politician and you've accused me of supporting abuse and misogyny."

As the tweets escalated, McGarry questioned whether she was being bullied while Rowling continued to demand an explanation.

McGarry apparently apologised but moments later continued the Twitter debate.

Later, McGarry said: "Realised how much I now hate Twitter. It's been eight years, but it's over Twitter. We are finished."

Rowling then rounded off the argument with a suggestion she may take legal action for defamation.
