'Never say never' to Pope visit to UK, says UK-born Archbishop

For all faiths and none, the Vatican is one of the most familiar sights in the world.

ITV News presenter, Julie Etchingham was given rare access to the Apostolic Palace, the seat of Vatican government.

There she met the Pope's foreign secretary, originally from Liverpool, Archbishop Paul Gallagher.

Having served as a papal diplomat all over the world, he now has weekly meetings with Pope Francis.

He told her what it is like working with Pope Francis and why he hopes Britain won't leave the European Union.

"Never say never," he said when asked whether the Pope would one day visit Britain.

"He certainly might," he added. "I think he has enormous respect for Britain, our traditions. He seems to be really quite familiar with our literature for example and I think he likes Britain and the British as far as I can see."

On the issue of whether the UK should stay in the EU, he said it was up to the British electorate to decide.

"I think we would see it as being something that is not going to make a stronger Europe. Better in than out," he said.
