Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have been handed transfer bans by Fifa for rule breaches relating to the signing of players under the age of 18.

The two Spanish clubs won't be able to register players for the next two transfer windows, following the Fifa Disciplinary Committee decision.

Atlético have been fined £622,000 and local rivals Real £249,000 in addition to the player registration ban.

Barcelona recently suffered a similar sanction and signed Aleix Vidal and Arda Turan in the summer, but were unable to register them until January 2016.

Atletico say they intent to appeal against Fifa's decision.

A club statement read: "Our club is not in agreement with the sanction from international football's governing body and will study all the documentation we've received to present an appeal against the sanction."
