Chelsea have sacked manager Jose Mourinho after a poor start to the season, the club have confirmed.

The Premier League champions currently lie in 16th place in the table following their latest defeat to Chelsea on Monday.

Mourinho only signed a new deal in the summer, but the disastrous start to the season has seen the Portuguese depart the club.

The season has been beset with issues including the departure of doctor Eva Carneiro following after two fell out over the treatment of Eden Hazard during a game.

It is expected that the club will pay Mourinho up to the end of the season.

Chelsea have been linked with the likes of Juande Ramos and Guus Hiddink, who could take the role on a short-term basis. It is thought the Dutchman is favourite to take the role of interim manager.

The loss to Leicester on Monday night was the final straw for the Chelsea hierarchy who met during the week to decide Mourinho's fate, with the outcome almost inevitable in the end.

Former Real Madrid and Inter Milan manager Mourinho has been highly critical of his players, saying he felt "betrayed" by his stars after the defeat at the King Power.

Midfielder Cesc Fabregas this week stated the club's players need to start "earning their wages", as Mourinho leaves with the Blues just above the relegation zone.
