A 27-year-old Israeli security guard was taken to hospital after the event, although he appeared to have suffered cuts on his hand from bullet shrapnel.

CCTV footage of the event has raised questions over the level of force used by the police - one of the officers appeared to discharge his weapon several times at one of the girls, even after she was lying motionless on the ground.

Palestinians believe Israeli security forces are too quick to use lethal force, but a wave of stabbings in recent months has put the Israeli security forces on edge.

Soon after the event a Palestinian stabbed and killed an Israeli at a petrol station in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

In another incident a Palestinian was shot dead near the West Bank city of Nablus after approaching soldiers with a knife, the military said.

86 Palestinians have been killed in the spate of violence since October 1, some while carrying out attacks and others in clashes with Israeli forces. 19 Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks.
