People in Brussels have started flooding Twitter with pictures of cats, in respect of a police request not to post details of ongoing anti-terror operations in the city.

The Belgian capital remains on lockdown, with Prime Minister Charles Michel warning of a "serious" and "imminent" threat of a Paris-style attack.

The Police Fédérale in Brussels asked people to refrain from revealing details of their operations in the city after several roads were sealed off and masked special forces operatives swooped on a number of neighbourhoods.

In response, people created the #BrusselsLockdown and #BelgianSurrealism hashtags and flooded Twitter with pictures of their pets instead.
