Is this cold weather set to last?
Last night temperatures dropped below freezing for many with Topcliffe in North Yorkshire the coldest spot recorded as the mercury dropped to -6C. This made it the coldest night of the autumn season, beating Braemar (Aberdeenshire) who recorded temperatures of -5C on October 17.
Tonight the UK can expect another cold night and under clear skies and light winds there will be widespread frost across both ground and air as temperatures drop below freezing.
But how do we differentiate between ground and air frost?
A ground frost refers to the formation of ice on the ground, where the temperature of the surface falls below the freezing.
An air frost also occurs when the air temperature falls to or below freezing, but at a height of at least one metre above the ground.
So expect a cold and frosty start to Monday morning and if you are planning to drive early morning, allow extra time to scrape the car.
Gardeners will also need to be aware of tonight's frost.
In terms of the rest of the week ahead the weather looks changeable.
It will be less cold overall, with temperatures turning milder compared to this weekend (around average for the time of year 7-12C). One slight blip to this trend is a brief cold spell likely Wednesday (though not as cold as this weekend) before gradually becoming milder again through Thursday/early Friday.
As well as the change in temperatures, it will be a fairly unsettled week of weather, with spells of rain and showers, as well as some windy conditions.
