An elderly couple called 999 because they were lonely

An elderly couple called 999 because they were "lonely".

Greater Manchester Police went to the home of Fred and Doris Thomson, both 95, after they received the emergency call.

Police Constable Stu Ockwell said he feared the couple may have been injured when they arrived at the house.

But he found that they just wanted someone to talk to.

So he made them a cup of tea.

He said the couple had phoned the police "out of desperation".

Fred Thomson told ITV News that he was grateful for the police officer's gesture.

"It was a nice change to have somebody to talk to.

"I was very pleased to know there was help about and pleased to talk to them because sometimes you can be a bit isolated as you get older but they made me feel at home."
