Quadriplegic man shares his first dance with his wife
A man who was never expected to be able to get out of a wheelchair has shared his first dance with his wife.
When Lauren Jackson married quadriplegic Joel Jackson in 2013 she told him: "When you can walk, I want you to dance with me."
Joel had been in a car crash in 2009 which separated his spine from his head.
But a couple weeks ago, their wish for a dance came true in the rehabilitation hospital in Florida.
Lauren and Joel, both 26, shared an impromptu moment swaying to their wedding song, Edwin McCain's "I'll Be".
In December 2009, Joel and five other young people got into a car with a drunk driver, who hit a telephone pole.
A 15-year-old girl died, and Joel, 20 then, was thrown from the car. The impact shattered his spine where it connects to his skull. Joel spent weeks in a coma.
After 87 days in the hospital, he was sent home to live with his family.
Lauren said: "As I understand it, the doctors just said, 'This is as good as his life is ever going to be. Make him comfortable.'"
Lauren and Joel Lauren and Joel have known each other since they were 14 and began dating in 2012, before marrying a year later.
Joel has been undergoing physical therapy at Brooks Rehabilitation in the US.
Their first dance was a big milestone for the couple.
"Euphoric," recalled Joel, who spoke to NBC News with the help of a computer.
Lauren recorded the moment and posted the video on her blog, where she documents their journey.
Lauren said: "The little things mean so much to us."
Bob McIver, manager of Brooks Rehabilitation's Neuro Recovery Center, said he has continued to regain strength and body movement.
