Man hit by train at Twickenham station after opening Rugby World Cup match
A man has suffered head and leg injuries after he fell onto the track at Twickenham station and was hit by an oncoming train.
Train services were initially suspended in both directions at Twickenham after the accident as thousands of fans were trying to make their way home after the first game of the Rugby World Cup.
British Transport Police (BTP) said they were called to the scene around 11pm and the man was removed from the tracks around 20 minutes later and treated paramedics.
The man is being treated in the West Middlesex Hospital.
Services in and out of the station resumed shortly after.
The man fell onto the tracks at platform 3, a British Transport Police spokesperson said, but added that it was unclear exactly how it had happened.
A spokeswoman for the South West Trains and Network Rail Alliance said the disruption affected trains between Twickenham and London Waterloo and said extra staff are on duty at the station.
"Our immediate thoughts are for the welfare of the person involved," said the spokeswoman.
"We have additional staff on duty at the station and British Transport Police and paramedics are on site.
"Services have resumed however delays are expected until the end of service.
"We're sorry for the disruption this may cause to passengers."
Almost 82,000 people including Prince Harry and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the first game of the tournament on Friday at Twickenham stadium, to see hosts England beat Fiji.
