Two British holidaymakers narrowly escaped being crushed to death when a 40-ton humpback whale launched itself onto their kayak.

Tom Mustill and Charlotte Kinloch were paddling off Monterey Bay in California when a whale jumped out of the water and landed on their boat.

The incredible footage, filmed by Sanctuary Cruises, shows the whale breaching the water and crash landing on their boat, dragging it under water.

The pair, from London, escaped unhurt and have told The Telegraph about the "terrifying" moment the whale came crashing down.

The suction pulled them underwater but they were able to surface and swim back to their kayak.

Wildlife film maker Mr Mustill, 31, said he was still struggling to believe they had survived.

The pair had been out kayaking with friends and were on their way back to the shore when the incident happened.

The pair were managed to swim to the surface.
