Care home nurses struck off after neglect led to patient deaths

Three nurses have been struck off after it was found their poor care contributed to the deaths of patients at a care home in Wales.

A Nursing and Midwifery Council panel found 86 failings proved out of an alleged 150 against staff at Brithdir Care Home in Caerphilly between 2004 and 2006.

They related to patient neglect, particularly around pressure sores which often became infected, faulty equipment and poor record keeping.

The actions of nurse Tembakazi Moyana were found to have contributed to three patient deaths.

While nurses Daphne Richards and Rachel Tanta, who were said to have "callous attitudes" towards patients, each contributed to one death.

Care home manager Susan Greening was given a caution order for four years.

The panel found she "failed in her oversight that the well-being of residents came first".

While nurse Beverley Mock, whose actions caused risk of harm but no contribution to any deaths, was suspended for one year.

The care home was one of six investigated as part of Gwent Police's £11.6m Operation Jasmine into the deaths of 63 elderly people.

Families of patients who lived at the home are pushing for criminal prosecutions after the deaths of their loved ones.

The care home is now under new management.
