British boy, 4, drowns in swimming pool in Spain's Costa del Sol

A four-year-old British boy has drowned in a swimming pool at a holiday villa in Spain.

The child died at around 9pm on Sunday at a house in Mijas on the Costa del Sol, a spokesman for the area's local authority confirmed.

He added that 20 people were at the property at the time of the incident.

A Foreign Office spokesman told ITV News:

According to the Daily Mirror, the child, is thought to have been playing with other children when the incident took place.

A teenage boy is said to have alerted adults to the emergency after discovering the youngster in the pool.

One of the parents attempted to revive the child before paramedics arrived. However, he was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival at the scene.

An investigating judge has been placed in charge of a routine investigation into the incident at the villa, situated a short drive from La Cala de Mijas, on the coast between Marbella and Fuengirola.

A post-mortem is expected to take place in Malaga on Monday.
