Manchester United has unveiled its new home kit - but not everyone is happy with the Adidas design.

The club has been branded "sexist" over the decision to make the women's top with a much lower cut neckline than the men's.

One frustrated fan pointed out that the club's former Nike kit for women was "exactly same design" as the men's shirt, adding "Take note @adidasfootball."

The new kit is Adidas' first for the club since 1992, after the German sports giant took over from US rivals Nike in a £750 million deal.

Manchester City fan Anna Kappa tweeted: "First @ManUtd can't be bothered to have an adult women's team & now the #sexist women's shirt!"

Another fan, Roy Aurstad, tweeted: "Women's kit was both horrendous and sexist. Shame since they did a great job on the men's kit."

There were also complaints that while the classic black stripe remains around the collar on the men's shirts, it does not feature on the new women's top.

However, some female fans expressed their support for the new design.

Andrea Ryder said: "Personally, I really like the shape of the Man Utd women's shirt... #justmethen."

Another fan, Natalie Dickinson, sent a picture of herself wearing the new kit to the Manchester Evening News, saying: "I love my shirt. Makes a nice change as I usually feel like I'm being strangled by T-shirts and football shirts.

"It's actually quite flattering as it's not as if they don't have the choice of buying the men's one instead."

A spokeswoman for Kitbag, which operates the Manchester United online store on behalf of the club said: "Manchester United do not have a women’s football team, and so the women’s replica is not designed as a performance-based product, but rather a lifestyle one.

"Including this within the range provides consumer choice: we have a high number of fans and customers who are delighted to have had a differentiated design this year for the women’s shirt, and we also have others who prefer to purchase their size in the men’s version."
