It has long had its place in the hearts of many Britons but now the traditional Bramley apple pie filling has been named a national delicacy.

A European ruling has given the Bramley apple pie filling protected status alongside several other delicacies such as Italy’s mozzarella, champagne, the Cornish pasty and Belgian beer.

The mixture has been added to the European Commission’s Traditional Specialities Guaranteed (TSG) list which seeks to protect the reputation of regional products.

The law also seeks to promote traditional and agricultural activity and ensure inferior products cannot be promoted unfairly.

Products can only be registered as TSG if the materials and methods used to produce it are traditional.
