Six people have been seriously injured in a coach crash in France after the driver went under a low bridge near Lille.

Around 60 Spanish nationals aged between 18 an 29 were onboard the bus when it crashed at around 5:30am on Sunday, La Voix du Nord reported.

The coach was travelling from Bilbao to Amsterdam when the driver reportedly followed his sat-nav into the bridge.

He was taken into custody but tested negative for drugs and alcohol, 20 Minutes reported.

Many of the passengers were reportedly sleeping at the time of the crash.

"It was horrible," said one. "Suddenly, the tunnel roof was there."

Dozens were injured, with the most serious injuries occurring near the back of the bus because of debris transported by the impact, passengers said.
