Donald Trump 'contacts FBI' over drug lord El Chapo's threats
You could be mistaken for thinking this is a Hollywood script but this - remarkably - appears to be real.
An escaped Mexican drug lord has reportedly threatened Donald Trump, prompting the billionaire businessman to contact the FBI.
Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman staged an action-movie style escape from a maximum security prison at the weekend through a complex tunnel system built underneath his cell.
The drug-running Forbes-list billionaire and his supporters spared little time in mocking authorities, calling Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto as a "coward" and launching a special attack on the US star of The Apprentice - who recently accused Mexico of sending rapists and criminals to America.
An expletives-ridden post from a Twitter account reportedly run by El Chapo's son Ivan, said be-wigged businessman Trump would be made to "swallow his words".
The tweet was written in Spanish and included a common Mexican homophobic slur. A rough English translation is: "Keep f***ing around and I'm gonna make you swallow your bitch words you f***ing whitey milks***tter."
Trump has been in the middle of a heated debate since raising the issue of illegal immigration when he announced he was running as a Republican presidential candidate last month.
NBC effectively fired Mr Trump from the network last month - dropping his shows including the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants - for the inflammatory comments on Mexican immigrants that sparked the exchange with El Chapo's men.
Trump appears to have taken a bold stance on social media in the wake of the threat, posting a tweet saying: "El Chapo and the Mexican drug cartels use the border unimpeded like it was a vacuum cleaner, sucking drugs and death right into the US."
However US Entertainment website TMZ reports that Trump has asked the FBI to investigate the threats, but is refusing to back down from his controversial remarks.
"I'm fighting for much more than myself," Trump says, I'm fighting for the future of our country which is being overrun by criminals. You can't be intimidated. It's too important."
El Chapo, 58, is the kingpin of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of Mexico's most notorious criminal organisations. It is thought that the cartel is responsible for around 25% of all the illegal drugs that enter the US from Mexico.
In the aftermath of the escape, an embarrassed Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto has vowed to recapture Guzman, and ordered a full investigation into whether the escape happened with the help of public officials.
